Beats Rhymes and Life

Beats Rhymes and Life exist's to To reduce stigma and increase access for youth of color and other marginalized youth, seeking therapeutic services. There is a general distrust of systems of care because of the lack of diversity and the lack of culturally-congruent, strength-based and youth-centered service models. Beats Rhymes and Life (BRL) is a community-based organization that initially began in response to a critical need for therapeutic programming, to specifically address the mental health needs within Black and Brown communities. From the outset, we’ve been on a mission to challenge stereotypes surrounding Hip Hop culture in order to harness its therapeutic value. Our journey has cultivated in the establishment of the world’s first nonprofit dedicated to the development, practice, and preservation of Hip Hop Therapy. At its core, Beats Rhymes and Life exists to empower young people to explore and embrace their authentic narratives through the healing power of hip hop, fostering resilience and self-discovery.

Our Story

The Beginning (2004 - 2009)

In 2004, a groundbreaking vision around healing and accessibility formed in the heart of the Bay Area. Tomás Alvarez III, a dedicated school social worker, and Rob Jackson an impassioned teaching artist, embarked on a transformative journey to revolutionize mental health care for young people. They pioneered the worlds first 'Hip Hop Therapy' model—an innovative approach that harnesses the power of creating rap music to engage disenfranchised and marginalized youth in a meaningful therapeutic experience. The two service providers crafted a program deeply rooted in the lives and perspectives of the young men they served. The results were nothing short of extraordinary: participants reported significant improvements in mood and self-esteem, alongside a marked reduction in at-risk behaviors. This was not just therapy; it was a lifeline.

As these youth participants discovered the healing potential of Hip-Hop Therapy, they also began to dismantle the stigma surrounding mental health care, transforming their attitudes toward seeking help. Over the following years, Tomás and Rob further refined the "BRL Hip Hop Therapy Model," expanding its reach to public schools and mental health facilities throughout the Bay Area. The innovation began to garner support while being shared at conferences and symposiums nationwide, shining a spotlight on its revolutionary approach to mental health promotion. With each presentation, the impact of BRL’s work grew, illustrating a powerful narrative of hope, resilience, and the undeniable connection between culture and healing. This is more than a program; it is a movement that has the potential to redefine the landscape of mental health for generations to come.

The Birth of an Organization (2010 - 2011)

By 2010, the demand for Hip Hop Therapy in the Bay Area had reached a fever pitch, igniting a bold new vision for BRL. In 2011, the organization proudly established itself as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit, setting the stage for BRL to expand its revolutionary approach. Shortly thereafter, BRL became a trailblazer, pioneering Hip Hop Therapy programs across multiple cities, including Oakland, San Francisco, and the South Bronx, New York—a monumental achievement that positioned BRL at the forefront of mental health innovation.

Recognizing the pressing need for transformative programs, BRL set out to create a robust system for replicating our successful model. This effort culminated in a powerful partnership with the Seneca Family of Agencies, enabling us to extend Hip Hop Therapy to youth in the foster care and juvenile justice systems across Oakland and San Francisco. Central to our mission is the establishment of The Academy, a comprehensive wrap-around services program for transitional aged youth. Designed as a pathways program, The Academy not only diversifies the social services workforce but also trains young adults on our model, empowering them to become peer specialists. By providing both therapeutic and life skills support for youth ages 18-26, The Academy stands as a key component of our success.

The Nation Takes Notice (2012)

2012 marked a transformative milestone for Beats Rhymes and Life, Inc., thrusting our organization and its visionary leadership into the national spotlight. That year we released our documentary film A Lovely Day, which showcases the power of Hip Hop Therapy in driving meaningful change in Oakland. The film premiered at the historic Grand Lake Theater, and not only resonated with the audiences but also earned acclaim on the independent film circuit, garnering numerous awards and accolades. Our innovative approach captured the attention of scholars as well, leading to a dedicated chapter in the acclaimed book Therapeutic Uses of Rap and Hip Hop. Moreover, the California Institute for Behavioral Health Solutions (CiBHS) recognized our Hip-Hop Therapy model as a Community-Defined Practice (CDP) for Transitional Age Youth (TAY), solidifying our position as pioneers in the field.

From Provider to Thought Leader (2013 - 2014)

In 2013, inspired by the success of our Hip-Hop Therapy programs, Beats Rhymes and Life, Inc. embarked on an exciting new chapter with the renovation of our first-ever headquarters, affectionately known as BRLHQ. This pivotal moment marked a period of extraordinary growth, as our organization nearly doubled in size within just twelve months. By 2014, we secured training contracts with five of Northern California's largest mental health providers dedicated to supporting children and families.

These partnerships provided BRL with a powerful platform for systemic change, allowing us to share our unique philosophy and innovative approach to mental health on a broader scale. Recognizing that lasting impact requires collaboration, we began offering skills-based training and best practices for social service providers. By equipping the adults who interact with the youth we serve, we aimed to create a more supportive environment that extends beyond our programs.

Raising the Bar for Mental Health (2015 and Beyond)

Today, Beats Rhymes and Life is a leader in the emerging field of Hip Hop Therapy. BRL is committed to eliminating health disparities by partnering with youth and young adults to make mental health services more accessible and useful to diverse populations. BRL is the only non-profit in the country utilizing teams of trained clinicians, teaching artists and peer mentors to deliver Hip Hop Therapy in major urban settings.

BRL also provides training and technical assistance to youth-serving individuals, organizations and systems that want to ensure that all youth has access to quality and culturally relevant therapeutic care.
