Let’s CHAT Teen Issues

Youth Organizing and Leadership

Let’s CHAT is one of Beats Rhymes and Life’s Greenhouse Programs. Let’s CHAT began as a pilot project in 2010-2011 designed to serve as a youth development/advocacy programs design to increase awareness about the alarming rate of teen pregnancy in the Ashland, Cherryland and San Lorenzo communities (southern Alameda County). The 2010 Let’s CHAT pilot program was a part of a larger awareness project operated in partnership by Alameda County School Health Services, The Ashland Youth Center, Girls Inc. of Alameda County and Beats, Rhymes and Life. The pilot had three goals; (1) conducted a youth-led Participatory Action Research Project on the high rate of teen pregnancy, (2) develop policy recommendations based on research (click here to view recommendations), (3) design and implement a media campaign (see below) geared at engaging youth, adults and decision makers, and (4) coordinate a culminating community event to launch campaign during the month of May (National Teen Pregnancy Awareness Month). The pilot project spanned from January 2011 to June 2011 and generated a lot of buzz and community support. Youth that participated in the program decided to keep it going as a grassroots program during the summer and successfully advocated for ongoing support from the Ashland Youth Center Project and Beats Rhymes and Life to build off the achievements of the Let’s CHAT pilot and help transition the pilot into a annual program offered through the Ashland Youth Center.
