KEEPIN’ IT SOLID

Edu-tainment
In the Summer 2010, BRL’s FRESH THE MAGAZINE program teamed up with EBAYC’s STREETSIDE PRODUCTIONS program to operate a summer youth development internship. Little did we know the collaboration would result in a edgy youth produced television show, where young people keep it honest, keep it real, and “keep it solid” on the issues that matter. Youth that participated in the six-week internship hit up their local communities to produce a thirty-minute show that covered topics including “Racial Identity”, “Fear of Failure”, and “Parent/Teen Relationships”. A total of 15 youthparticipated in the summer internship and received training in video production, blogging and public speaking. After completing the program, youth coordinated and facilitated a public premier at the Eastside Arts Alliance to a packed house. The presentation included a youth panel where members from the audience got to answer questions from the crowd. When asks what they learned from the process, one youth replied,
This program has kept me away from trouble by making me come everyday and kept me very busy this summer. I gained so much from this job and I am very thankful and lucky for this opportunity. I have made myself proud and hopefully my whole family too.
Keepin’ It Solid could not have been possible without support from the East Bay Asian Youth Center and efforts from the program’s coordinators, Peter Kim (EBAYC/Streetside Productions), Paloma Belara (FRESH/BRL), Halline Overby (FRESH/BRL) and Tomas Alvarez (FRESH/BRL).
