FRESH The Magazine

Media Literacy Meets Youth Development

Social media has change the was people communicate and interact. FRESH the Magazine is an online media project that creates a platform for teens to showcase their creative works, build community, become advocates for themselves, discuss critical issues affecting youth health, and connect to local programs and resources, while developing professional business and media skills. FRESH, which stands for For Real Expression Start Here, was created in 2007 by a group of Oakland youth attending a summer BRL/EBAYC youth development program. From 2007-2010 BRL operated the FRESH program at Oakland in partnership with Oakland High School Shop 55 Wellness Center. Over the years FRESH has fostered partnerships with many community-based organizations and programs which include; the East Bay Asia Youth Center, Streetside Productions, Distortion 2 Static and Papa Lowdown. We are very excited to announce that starting this year, FRESH will be operated by the Oakland High Wellness Center and it’s youth! We look forward to seeing how FRESH will grow in the coming years and BRL is proud to have contributed to such a innovative project.
