Daughters of Dilla

Bringing Her-story Back To Hip Hop
Over the last forty years females and Hip Hop have had an interesting relationship. Although many credit DJ Kool Herc with the invention of Hip Hop music, it was actually his sister that suggested to him, he take his new musical creation to the streets and offer it to the community’s youth, who were desperately in need of positive and affordable social outlets. DJ Kool Herc followed through on his sister’s recommendation and the rest was history (and her-story). This story reminds us that females have played vital role in contributing to and helping shape Hip Hop since its creation. Women have also been exploited and dehumanized by Hip Hop as well, both are facts that warrant exploration and discussion.
Daughters of Dilla (DOD) grew out of a desire to help young women of color build power through Hip Hop.
By purposefully connecting young women to the elements of Hip Hop, DOD strives to create opportunities for positive identity development, mentorship, sisterhood and empowerment. Currently, DOD is working on a strategic plan for achieving it’s vision and mission. In the meantime, we have created a Daughters of Dilla Blog, designed to serve as a platform to connect young women to the positive influences and inspirations of Hip Hop culture and beyond.
